Locomotive Lager

Iron Road Brewery

5% Alcohol

Aligned with our vision of free beer, I have decided only to attend events with an open bar. It is a matter of principle (or is that principal). It may just be our principal principle. Of course, a couple of free drink tickets is a grey area (or is that a gray area) but on a one and done evening it fits the bill (as in no bill) nicely.*

Kamloops BC is a railroad and mining town, so it seems fitting that Iron Road was started by two geologists. Which led me to wonder whether my beer would be salted or spiked.** It is also the first time I have ever seen two geologists agree about anything.

A Fine Pour, Did I Mention It Was Free?

A fine pour*** and I’m enjoying a golden lager, while meeting old friends and new, when who do I run into? None other than the CEO of the Grand Dames Sipping Suds, our arch-rival beer review group. Yes, the same group that had snatched the coveted 2023 “Best New Beer Review Website with No Revenue” award from our grasp in Montreal. She had arrived the evening before so no doubt she was already well ahead of me in terms of the local suds sampling. No time for worry or regret, I have a free beer at, and in, hand.

A pilsner like malt crisp aroma. And the taste is pilsner like as well, nice malt body and crisp with dry bitters  on the end. No lager sweet, it’s more like an ale with an IBU a bit higher than your typical lager. Definitely a Czech style, with the Pilsner and Saaz hops putting on a show. The crisp finish leads to a touch of bitters in the aftertaste. Refreshingly good or good and refreshing? No matter what you call it or how you pour it and score it, it’s good beer. Did I mention it was free?

*Editor’s Comment: A principle is a rule or guideline. A Principal is someone in charge of a school. Principal as an adjective can mean first or foremost. In this case it is somewhat surprising that our reviewer has used both words correctly. As for gray or grey, both spellings are correct and mean the same thing. In Canada grey is preferred, it is “The Grey Cup” after all. In the UK it is Earl Grey Tea. In the US it is “50 Shades of Gray”.

**Editor’s Comment: Salting a mineral sample is adding a valuable mineral to it to make it look like an attractive orebody and investment. Bre-X is perhaps the most famous example of “salting” in modern times. The last spike in the Trans Canada railroad was driven not far from Kamloops, near Craigellachie, BC.

***Editor’s Comment: Because someone who knew what they were doing poured it.
