Greetings from Belgium: A Bruges by Bracebridge Brew

Greetings from Belgium

Muskoka Brewery

7.8% Alcohol

Did you know that Belgium can do more than waffles and chocolate and claim to be where Dr. Evil *was raised? I didn’t, but apparently there are over 1200 types of beer brewed in the country which equates to a different type of beer for every 25.57 square kilometers of Belgium. Good to know.

In this edition of the Muskoka Brewery Big World Small Batch Series they team up with Het Nest Brouweri to create this strong (7.8% ABV) golden ale. I am reading a book about beer while drinking a beer to do a review on that beer, which I consider to be multi multi-tasking. The book was a thoughtful gift from my favourite son**.

The Belgian style beers we have reviewed, like Belgian Moon for example, have usually been wheat beers, which have not fared well with the COMDB, just not our thing. This brew is definitely not a wheat beer, this strong ale pours golden for sure, a bit hazy with a bit of carbonation. It is a headless horseman which sometimes forewarns us of an apocalypse, and I often find that to be the case with high ABV brews (headless that is but sometimes an apocalyptic review as well). The aroma is mild all malt. The flavour is all malt, with some fizz, malt body, malt aftertaste, lots of malt. Is there any malt left in Belgium now? Lots of flavour, and its all good. Not boozy, no hops, no head, no zing, just malt. It is definitely a strong beer, not overpowering, but I wouldn’t be operating a chain saw or working on the roof after a few of these.  I really appreciated the fact that this is strong beer but never got boozy.

An enjoyable tour of Belgium via the Muskokas.

*Editor’s Comment: From the Austin Powers movies, Dr. Evil is an evil genius, Austin Powers’ chief nemesis, and also happens to be Austin’s long lost twin brother whose real fictional name is Douglas Powers. He was raised in Bruges, Belgium

**Editors Comment: Your only son if I recall.

**Reviewer’s Comment: True, but if I had two sons there is a pretty good chance he would be my favourite.
