Mackey House Fire 1945
The bear on the can with the hands of a man is reading the North Bay newspaper from February 20th, 1945. In addition to news of Allied victories on many fronts (Germany surrendered on May 7 1945) the other major headline would have been the downtown blaze that burnt Mackey House to the ground. Gateway City is once again paying tribute to one of their hometown landmarks of a bygone era. Mackey House was built in 1886 and was a hotel and also contained a number of businesses until its untimely demise that firefighters faced that fateful freezing February day.
And now a modern day COMDB headline, this Mackey House Pale Ale pours a subdued golden hazy pour with a bit of a foam head line. A fresh aroma, hops definitely present. A tropical/citrus fruit body with a middling bitter finish. As balanced as a Wallenda.* The initial bitter becomes a bit of a bitter fizz. A refreshing mild fruit body with a lightly bitter pine finish.
A very enjoyable Pale Ale with all the elements working together in balance and doing what they should.
