Hip hop? I can tell you who’s who in The Who, or who’s still alive from the Grateful Dead. I can talk rock like nobody’s business. Hip Hop, not so much. There is that guy named after the candies, M&M, then there’s the Bestie Boys, and Mary Obliged but that’s all I got.* I picked up this Hip Hop Harvest from Breakwall Brewing and since I am not familiar with Hip Hop I asked them what kind of beer this was. “It’s a smash ale” they replied. What the hell is a smash ale I said, the expletives deleted in my verbal discourse, of course. They gave this guy Kirk Mackenzie a bunch of hops and he smashed them together and this is what came out of the vats! So what kind of a brew did the third Mackenzie brother brew, hoser?** Let’s find out, shall we?
A muted golden pour with a healthy hip hop harvest head, looking good. A tropical juicy aroma, an IPA impersonator on the nose. The first taste is juicy and light, an almost airy mouthfeel. No hoppy bitters on first blush, reminiscent of a session IPA, as in easy drinking and refreshing. Dry itty bitty bitters show up as it evolves, or maybe it was the big swig I took? A grapefruit bitter finish starts to come through and it works well.
A light easy drinking ale with a nice tropical juice body and a mild bitter on the finish. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t get smashed, but I did get very pleasantly surprised.
