I Was Warned, Her Sweet’s Gone Sour

Sour Blonde

Shillow Beer Co.

5.7% Alcohol

Just like ol’ Robert Cray, I was warned about this suicide blonde, that her sweet’s gone sour.* Yes, the game was afoot**, this miss was amiss, this brew was askew. What the hell am I talking about you must be thinking.*** This innocent ale, so labelled as a blonde, was no such thing. Mislabeled from first canning, this ambitious blonde, through no volition of her own, has led a shelf life of deceit. This is no blonde ale like the label would suggest (and actually says).  It is, in fact, a tart and sassy sour. Aha. The jig is up.

About being warned. None other than Ben Shillow himself sent us the word, letting COM know that the Blonde Ale in the Beer of the month club selection bearing his name (that being Shillow, not Blonde, although Ben may be blonde for all we know) was in fact a “tart/sour blonde, mislabeled in error”. Good to know. If memory serves me correctly, which tends to be happening less frequently these days, we did have a case of mistaken identity previously with an IPA and a sour, but with no advanced warning.

Although something wasn’t kosher, the beer was, as is all beer from Shillow. It poured a burnt orange, with no head to speak of so I won’t, or did I just? First whiff confirmed the warning, a sour tang was in the air. Yep, fizzy and sour on the tongue too, a tart tangy tangster gangster.  Citrus, peach, mango, tropical? It sometimes hard to decipher when it’s tangy sour suds. The fizz is starting to settle a bit but the fruit and tang are intact. A refreshing tart and tangy fruit sour. A good sour as sours go, and let me assure you, they go both ways.

*Editor’s Comment: The 1992 song by Robert Cray “I Was Warned” is from the album of the same name. “Suicide Blonde” was a 1990 song from Aussie band INXS. The song name was actually inspired by Hutchence’s then girlfriend Kylie Minogue, they were attending the opening of the movie “The Delinquents” which she starred in and for the premiere she wore a blonde wig, and she called the colour suicide blonde. “Sweets Gone Sour” is a song by Colin James from his 2012 album “FIFTEEN”.

**Editor’s Comments: Actually, the game was not afoot, but on the screen as the Jays handled the Mets with a 3 to zip shut out. Well done.

***Editor’s Comment: Often and usually.
