News Flash: Shortage of Chocolate in Belgium Plays Havoc with Easter Festivities. It appears a shortage of chocolate has been perpetrated by the Belgian brewer Hugel who have put so much chocolate in their Invidia beer that many children will go without their chocolate eggs and bunnies this Easter. When asked to comment on their beer, a representative from Hugel said ” Our Invidia beer represents one of the seven sins, Envy.”  Hugel went on to say “Blessed are those who sin.”*

Hugel have created seven beers to “honour” the seven cardinal sins, those being; pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. Invidia, sporting the green eye of envy on it’s label, is one of the seven. Ironic or coincidental is the definition of invidious: likely to arouse or incur resentment or anger in others, which may foreshadow this review.

Trop forte pour moi aussi!

It pours as black as Blacque Jacque Shellacque’s** moustache, with a head as tan as his toque. An aroma of death by chocolate. Hugel advise us that this is a “gourmet sipping beer”, so sip it is. Wow, loco cocoa. A strong kick in the head, take no prisoners, no holds barred, stout. A chocolate liqueur with a bit of fizz. No real bitters or burnt coffee, just roasted malts and chocolate. Maybe some fruit in there somewhere but backseat driving dark fruit with the loco cocoa at the wheel.  I may have to add this to the list of too strong too much and too bad stouts.

I took my life in my hands and tried a big swig just to see. After I recovered from that misstep I went back to sipping.  As it warmed a bit it continued to have an overbearing chocolate body with dark fruit in there somewhere, and a sweet aftertaste. A warm to reduce harm and sip to survive stout. I don’t think I will run into too many green eyed beer drinkers envious of my Invidia.

On the bottle they show a bunch of brewing medals they have won. I don’t get it. Maybe gourmet sipping medals? But for your average run of the mill cranky old man drinking beer, or any typical beer drinker, this one is a not medalling today.

*Editor’s Comment: The Bible Psalm 32 says “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered.” I don’t think you can really paraphrase that into “blessed are those who sin”.

**Editor’s Comment: Blacque Jacque Shellacque is a cartoon character nemesis to Bugs Bunny, and first appeared in the 1959 skit “Bonanza Bunny”. His thick French-Canadian accent was performed by Mel Blanc, who did many of the voices in that cartoon series.
