Keo Brewery of Cyprus

Cyprus on $3 a day

Picture a southern seaside Cyprus sunset with the waves lapping at the Island shore and a gentle Mediterranean breeze washing away the stresses of the day. A waiter in white, the model of service and efficiency, asks “Is there anything you would like, Sir” and when he says the word “Sir” it actually sounds respectful! You request a biera ,cerveza, biere, beer because the local language is all Greek to you and the waiter in white politely tells you he speaks English and asks “what type of beer would you enjoy, Sir.” “Nothing but the best” you reply with a flourish, “what is the best the Island has to offer?” The waiter wastes no time in replying ” Our Keo beer has been the Island favourite since 1951 and I would heartily recommend it without hesitation”, which is exactly what he has just done.

It is at this point you realize that the waiter most likely has a better command of the English language than you do,* and probably speaks four or five other languages just as well. “A Keo it is then my good man” and before you have completed your request an icy cold Keo with frosted glass is on the table beside your lounge chair. You tip the chilled glass to your lips just as the sun begins to dip below the horizon for a glorious first taste.

Reality check. The scene is actually a lazy old boy in an old lazy boy, bowl of peanuts spilling between the seat cushions, watching the Oilers get their asses kicked on the big screen in a windowless basement. I saunter over to the beer fridge and the first beer I grab turns out to be a Keo from some Island somewhere I have never been to and without a doubt will never make it to. The ingredients are all Greek to me so the only thing I recognize on the label is the 4.5%, which is all the assurance that I need that this is indeed a beer. A snap of the cap and a pour and Bob’s your uncle. It’s just like being on the Island, sort of, except instead of a brew on the coast I have a brew on a coaster. How else can you do Cyprus on $3 a day?

This brew pours a light seaside sunset golden with a bright white beach sand head topside. It has a light breezy malt aroma to it, nice. The taste is malt with a dash of citrus in the mix which works very well, and a crisp as crackers dry finish. A great tasting lager, light and refreshing, with a pilsner like finish. No lager sweet but instead a mild citrus in it’s place, a subtle substitute. An Island favourite and a mainland favourite too. Great beer.

That sharp dressed smooth-talking waiter in white knows his stuff.

*Editor’s Comment: That would put him in the vast majority.
