Light Local Lager Lauded

Local Lager

MacLean's Ales

4% Alcohol

What’s so great about beer of the month club? Let me tell you. Beer. Another thing that is great about it is getting introduced to brewer’s like MacLean’s Ales, hailing and harkening from the half-hidden hamlet of Hanover.* They seem to be a month club staple and we have enjoyed a brew or two by this great brewer. But a local lager from the ale masters, and a light one no less? Time to pop the top and see what’s under the hood.

Clear and bright, a light golden pour, a refreshing cold front reported in the daily press, but without head lines.  A fresh malt aroma, looks still, smells sparkling. It is a fresh full malt taste with a sweet crisp fizz driven finish. An absence of hops or bitters invites me to go big swig. Invitation accepted.  A great taste, a touch lighter than a normal lager. It’s almost pilsnerish in it’s presentation. The fizz didn’t fade like often is the case, and I think that adds to the refreshment factor.  I could see a few of these planted in a cooler on the boathouse roof could lead to mellow afternoon and a good ol’ fashion Hanover hangover. A crushable craft local lager from the ale team.

*Editor’s Comment: Tommy Burns (his real name was Noah Brusso), the only Canadian ever to hold the world heavyweight champion boxing title, was from Hanover. At 5’7” and 175 pounds he was significantly undersized for the division. He won the title in 1907 and defended it for three years.
