Mango Gose

Here at COMDB were are an equal opportunity drinker when it comes to beer, we try them all, at least once. The Gose genre* is not completely unfamiliar to us. We have told a few Gose stories around the old campfire, some of them pretty scary I must admit. In some ways similar to an arranged marriage, it isn’t love at first sight with a Gose, but maybe you can learn to like one and if you’re lucky, love one.

As for the fruit, I love me a mango. But it’s got to be just right, as in just ripe, and not too. This brew is a Burdock’s mango salt tango, made with “real mango” as opposed to the raft of mango imitators on the market today.

A muted yellow pour with a sliver of white on top. Looks more like a lemon meringue pie than a tart tropical juicer. Not as juicy on the nose as I expected or hoped for, but the juice is present in an undiscernible but not off-putting aroma. But the taste is juice squared, mucho macho mango, with a slightly salty sour accenting the juiciness. Sounds weird but tastes great. A slight tingle only enhances the refreshment factor. Lots of juice until the end when the juice warms and wanes and starts to fade and the salt steps in, but it has a nice evolution and the right juice forward imbalance to it from start to finish.

It definitely doesn’t taste like a beer, it has that mild sour tart to it, with a pinch of salt and a boat load of mango. A refreshing departure from the ordinary, a super suds summer treat.

*Editor’s Comment: The Gose genre of beers originated from Goslar Germany and are known for their lower alcohol content, lemon or citrus characteristics and a tart and salty taste. Technically they are a member of the sours wheat beer family.
