Belize it or Not
In January of 2023, I found myself in Belize, Central America. Now for all of you geographically-challenged types out there, Belize is not an island, nor does it have a Pacific Coast. It is a very small country directly south of the Mexican Yucatan, on the Caribbean coast. Great fishing, scuba-diving and snorkeling, and plenty of ancient Mayan ruins and natural wonders to explore. It was formerly known as British Honduras, and is the only country in Central America with English as the official language.
Anyway, in Belize they do have beer. Not a great selection of styles, and not as cheap as you’d expect, and mainly sold in little 300ml bottles. However, the first day out getting groceries, I discovered that the local market had a decent supply available, and then this beer caught my eye. Mainly because of the name: Mine Beer.
Being a mining type, I had to try it. So here is my review:
1. Cons: the taste. While it has a pleasing colour and attractive label, it turns out that Mine Beer doesn’t have a great flavour. How can I describe it? Skunky. I don’t know if it is the tropical weather, or the transportation, or what, but it has the aroma and aftertaste of the dregs of a Pilsner, left in a bottle in the sun overnight and found the next day around noon. In other words, I’d still drink it. It’s just not the best.
2.Pros: I already mentioned the colour and the label. Oh, and the name. Would make for great fun at a party: “That’s Mine Beer!” “No, it’s mine beer!” “No, it’s mine!” And so on. Ha Ha.
