In Asimov’s “Nightfall”* the planet of Lagash has six suns and since they never experience night, every Lagashian has an intense fear of perpetual darkness. With an eclipse imminent, their scientists postulate that the coming darkness will drive everyone to madness and the end of civilization.
Perhaps a good analogy to many beer drinkers? Being used to suds like Buds, a dark strikes fear into the hearts of many a brew crew. Fear not, this may be a dark you can not only endure but enjoy.
Muskoka Brewery – check. Dark Lager – check. Nitro – check. Chocolatey – check. Czech style – check. With all the boxes checked let’s check out this brooding brew.
Perpetual night dark, with a foaming tan cloud forming sky side. A nitro for sure, but I didn’t see the familiar cascade that usually accompanies a pop and hard pour. It smells creamy or is that the nitro head getting into my head? And the taste is creamy, with a roasted malt and cocoa tasty first quaff, a mild sweet finish, no coffee noticed. Not as creamy as some nitros but creamier than a non-nitro, don’t you know. By the third swig a bit of coffee comes into the picture, photo bombing the cocoa.
It all came together into a nice creamy dark lager with a cocoa coffee balance. Smooth, no espresso finish, just a nice balanced creamy cocoa coffee Czech craft lager. This Nightfall made my day.
