Octopus Up in Arms

The Blood of Cthulhu

Sawdust City Brewing

9.5% Alcohol

I wonder where they got the idea for me from?

A malevolent monster from the murky mire has risen to extract it’s vengeance on humanity. The octopus like creature is up in arms about something. This winged denizen of the deeps with eyes burning red like boiling blood, will take it’s toll on any human foolish enough to get in it’s way.   However, rather than feeling terror in the rising of Cthulhu, the Great Old One,* I have a song in my head.  “I’d like to be, Under the sea, in an octopus’s garden, in the shade.”** If your singing along to Octopus’s Garden it’s hard to be filled with dread, even if you are about to sample a very strong stout.

A rich thick dark pour, not sure if it’s my imagination but I caught a tinge of red below the head. A tan head topside. A very nice sturdy stout aroma, with some dark fruit to boot, rising from the depths … of my glass.  A thick dark fruit with coffee and a touch of cocoa, stout. Strong, but not harsh. The cherries and other dark fruits are overshadowing the cocoa which was present in the aroma but not so much in the quaff. More like a flavoured porter than a stout. It’s hard to think of stout without the coffee cocoa combination. An interesting brew, very strong but not harsh, sip or swig either works. I am not a great fan of super strong stouts, but this one wasn’t harsh or boozy. It’s an acquired taste which I acquired while I was drinking it. Ideal for the beer drinker looking for something strong, flavourful, and unique. Definitely not a mainstream fridge stocker or your game time go to brew.

More kick than a Rockettes chorus line. I don’t want to say I needed the extra ABV last night, let’s just say after a hectic day it was much appreciated.

*Editor’s Comment: HP Lovecraft created the fictional monster Cthulhu in his 1928 short story “The Call of Cthulhu”. It is a 100m tall monster with a head like a gigantic octopus, with tentacles surrounding its face and mouth. Throw a couple of wings in there too.

**Editor’s Comment: “Octopus’s Garden” was on the Beatles 1969 Abbey Road album. It is only one of two songs written by Ringo (Richard Starkey) that the Beatles recorded. Ringo sings lead on the song as well. In 2014 Ringo wrote a children’s book of the same name.
