Proper English?

Across the Pond

High Park Brewery

5.5% Alcohol

Here at Narky Old Gaffers Totting Pints I was gaggy for an English style bevvy, hoping for something brilliant that would leave me chuffed to bits. So I poured an Across the Pond to quaff with my crisps. It seems like donkey’s years since I’ve downed me an Amber. I wasn’t out to get trollied or legless or on the piss, I just fancied a proper wollop to veg out to.  I’m getting knackered trying to write in British, enough of this codswallop. When I reached out to the COMDB translation department for some help with this one, they said “Are you barmy? We don’t do British.” Time to revert to proper English and a proper English ale.

This High Park* English Special Ale pours solid amber, reflective and inviting, with a slim off white topper. A mild malt aroma reminiscent of ambers of the past. First swig reveals a touch of amber, a bit flat but OK, with a faint hoppy bitter, and then an acerbic aftertaste. Smooth front with bread malt and bitters on the flip side, but an unfortunate harsh chalky aftertaste. The aftertaste is a bit distracting but not the end of the world as we know it. But I could certainly do without it.

*Editor’s Comment: Not to be confused with Hyde Park in London, High Park in Toronto is the city’s largest public park.

Final Rating: Nice Body, Shame About the Aftertaste at 13 out of 20
