Salt Dock Jump by local artist Alan Stein

I’ve seen a few salt docks in my days. Isles de la Madeliene for one. Then there was Windsor Salt and of course Goderich. But the Parry Sound salt docks?* What’s that all about? The things you learn while drinking beer.

Then I got thinking about the expression “salt of the earth”.** “Oh he’s just the salt of the earth”. Doesn’t all salt come from the earth? Not much of a differentiator I’d say. But what about sea salt? Aha, now if you’re the salt of the earth you are only in the vast majority of the world salt production, still not that spectacular a compliment.

But since all underground salt was once sea salt, maybe all the salt in the world ultimately comes from the sea. Does that mean technically there is no such thing as the salt of the earth? So it’s like calling you a unicorn? Those creatures that were so playful they never got on the Ark in time, according to the Irish Rovers. And how about the expression “to salt the earth behind you”?** Someone who is the salt of the earth would never salt the earth behind them, now would they. I always find these discussions with myself quite illuminating but at the same time very vexing. It’s no wonder I drink.

When I see beer and salt together, I immediately think Gose, as I am sure you do too. But this Saison is no Gose, but a peachy summer season Saison from Parry Sound’s own Trestle Brewing Company.  Time to jump right into this brew and review.

A bright, light, spritely pour. The word lively comes to mind. A mild peach aroma to it. The taste is very mild peach with mild sour and not much else there. A very light watery mouthfeel not at all bubbly despite the effervescent pour. Now some tingle enters the picture. What evolves is a light refreshing slightly sour and tad bubbly peachy pint.  More like a session sour than a beer. A peach beerlini perhaps? Perhaps.

This is definitely a summer saison by the pool sunshine suds pint.  Or some liquid courage before taking your first salt dock jump of the season? Sorry, bad idea, we all know you shouldn’t drink and dive.
