Something to Sing About?

Stiegl Goldbräu

Stieglbrauerei Zu Salzberg

5.1% Alcohol

The original Stiegl lager. This brew is as Austrian as the Von Trapp family*. So is this lager something to sing about?

Brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Laws of 1516 which says only water, barley and hops may be used to brew beer. Starts out with a nice golden clear pour with a thin edelweiss white head. A nice full mouthfeel for a lager. Good malt flavour, a bit grainy which I find typical of many European lagers. Refreshing, not hoppy but a bit of a bitter finish, not a smooth finish. For the most part an easy drinking standard European lager but the bit of a harsh finish never finished.

Watching the Leafs last night, great finish. Watching the Blue Jays last night, sensational extra inning finish. Watched the Raptors the other night, stayin’ alive in the playoffs with another great finish. What is my point?** I appreciate a good finish, which I found lacking in my Stiegl last night.

Good traditional lager, nice flavour, a bit of a rough finish.

*Editor’s Comment: Who were a real family and also from Salzburg. The movie The Sound of Music was generally based on the first section of Maria von Trapp's book “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers”, published in 1949. As with most Hollywood movies based on true stories there were many liberties taken by the script writers. The alterations and omissions are too numerous to mention here.

**Editor’s Comment: You watch too much sports on TV?
