Another beer of the month club selection, Spunky Monkey Smash is apparently named after a mini-putt in Smith Falls? I was out golfing the other day, hacking and slashing my way down the course, back and forth like a sailboat tacking against a strong wind. Someone with good intentions and poor judgement, a combination found far too frequently these days, said I should just let my clubs do the work. However it appears my clubs are unionized and on a work to rule campaign, their primary complaint being that their manager doesn’t know what he’s doing.
After the ultimate day of frustration (golf), a light read with a light brew and a light snack in the moonlight sounds all right. This APA has a clear light golden pour with a thin white headlight on top. A fresh aroma with some fruit. My first swig was a bit of a surprise as in bitter. Bitter front and center and all points in between. I remember in the COMDB Guide to Beer Tasting it tells us that even a beer that starts out as bitter as the runner up at a beauty pageant can settle after a few swigs so I have hope for this brew still. Sure enough, the bitter starter faded early and a crisp finish was the closer (with hockey over I’m watching too much baseball these days). A nice pale fruit refresh with a light crisp finish. Toward the dregs the bitter came back for an encore, just to take a bow and remind me who started it all off, but it made for a nice mild bitter and fruit combo to end up with. A nice refreshing warm evening quaff. More relaxing than a game of golf, that’s for sure.
