Picture a congregation of cranky old men discussing the merits of steel cut versus packaged oatmeal, with each statement receiving a knowing nod of approval from the other cranky old men. The centuries of life experience in the room focused on healthy breakfast fare. Solving the problems of the world is a discussion that will have to wait until much later in the evening after a libation or two and no doubt will be equally illuminating.
Kingston Brewing Company certainly didn’t stipulate whether the oatmeal in their stout was steel cut or not, but I like to imagine that there are some health benefits in quaffing one. Although most likely any health benefits are mental rather than physical.*
Our last KBrew review was a cranky old site visit resulting in a tale to tell about a Whitetail on tap. This review is an out of the can fireside chat with an oatmeal stout on a chilly night by the lake. Stout season is in full swing.
A pour as dark as a BlackBerry screen these days. Slim trim slip of a head. The classic aroma of the roast and cocoa. I must say, it smells very delicious. First taste is a smooth full roast malt cocoa and very mild coffee. An easy going stout. You can take big swigs of this one, well I can anyway, you will have to get your own. With great balance of malt cocoa and coffee, this is a very nice classic cocoa oatmeal stout. Cocoaoatmeal? Cocoatmeal? Coatmeal? What ever you call it, it’s pretty tasty.
