To be honest I am stretching out Oktoberfest* as long as possible because the next theme is Halloween and I hate the taste of pumpkin. The COMDB translation department are of the opposite view, having worked (and booked) substantial overtime, and they have also been complaining about rashes induced by their wool lined lederhosen. Their official translation of this brew’s name “Hopfen Muncher” means “Hop Muncher”.
New Ontario has their Austrian ursine cranking out a polka on the old squeeze box. This lager is so named because of their use of Vienna Hops, traditionally of Austrian rather than German origin. This style is close to a märzen in my books, which is close to an amber, and I love me an amber.
This brew pours dark and ominous, the darkest of our Oktoberfest fare to date. The head was nowhere to be found, perhaps it headed for the hills?** A nice full bodied roasted malt aroma, porter-like in its presentation on the probiscis. Full flavour for sure, roasted malt like a porter, with a lager mouthfeel. Smooth no hops or bitters. Initially a slight roasted malt aftertaste, not unpleasant. The finish evolved into a slight sweet (caramel, you old smoothy) and very happy ending. This is a traditional Vienna lager, sitting between an amber and a porter. Nutritious? Maybe. Delicious? Definitely. The best of our Oktoberfest samplings this year.
