Taking the Family Out for a Stout

Irish Cream Stout

Southern Tier Brewing Co.

They have a kids menu.

On a family ski trip to Ellicottville NY and we passed by a restaurant named FTR. The misses thought it looked quaint, and would be good for us and the grandkids, so I said I would check it out online. “It has a kid’s menu” I told her, and that was all she wrote, we were on our way for a family dinner at FTR. I may have failed to mention that in my research I also found out what FTR stands for, that being Finnerty’s Tap Room. The pub games had the young ones enthralled, and the draft menu had my full attention.

An Irish Stout from Southern Tier caught my eye and was ordered in short order. Now, on countless occasions the Editor has admonished me for not reading the fine print. Maybe over the years I have got into some trouble on a few occasions by skimming a reading or two, school exams come to mind for starters. After ordering I was taking a second look at the draft menu, and I read Irish Cream Stout.* They must have snuck the cream in there when I wasn’t looking. Isn’t Bailey’s Irish Cream?

A Bailey’s Brewski

A dark dark brown pour that Finnerty himself would be proud of, with a tan taproom topper. A sweet aroma, dessert before dinner? And creamy it is, it does have a nice mouthfeel, I’ll give it that. Very creamy and very sweet but most of the stout is out and about and not actively participating in this brew. More baileys than brewski. The pros, a great creamy mouthfeel. The cons, sweeter than sugar coated sucrose laden maple syrup flavoured cotton candy confections. If it weren’t for the touch of stout, and the alcohol, I think the grandkids might have enjoyed this one.

If sweet brews are your thing, this cream puff did have a nice flavour in the background. No doubt there’s a stout lurking somewhere in among the Baileys.

*Editor's Comment: In this case it wasn't even fine print, It was print.
