Uncle Scar. Obviously not to be trusted.

We learn from Disney’s The Lion King about the circle of life, the importance of family, personal responsibility and to never trust an uncle named Scar (that one seemed obvious to me). Of course, if real life was a Disney movie everything would turn out happy ever after and we would be grumpy not cranky. But life isn’t Disney, is it. Things aren’t fair and the unicorns missed the ark. Deal with it.

Traditional stouts are in the range of 4% to 6% ABV. Lion Brewing out of Sri Lanka* tell us that this is an extra strong stout at 8.8% and has a “mocha liqueur” character.

Pouring as black as Scar’s intentions, with a thin mocha head. Full coffee aroma, very inviting, the aroma supports the extra strong claim. It starts out with a full not over the top but close to it coffee forward stout flavour with a boozy chocolate liqueur type backend that they warned us about. It is too full flavoured to be smooth, especially with such a strong finish.  As I progressed the finish became stronger, then harsh. I had to take small sips to survive. Definitely not a Disney finish.

The lion king in the wild can never be too strong but a stout can be, case in point.

*Editor’s Comment: Lion Brewing are based in Sri Lanka (Ceylon). It seems interesting that they reference Ceylon since the island state became the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972. Sinha comes from a Sanskrit word meaning "lion" or "brave person". Even though there are no wild lions on Sir Lanka and haven’t been in modern times the Sinhalese themselves are called “People of the Lion” or the “Lion Race”. The Sri Lankan national flag contains a sword-bearing lion.
