This Puck Stays Where It Is!

Many years ago Daryl Sittler was at one of our functions and gave a talk about his historic 10 point night which included 6 goals and 4 assists. In that 1976 Leafs home game against Boston*, Sittler’s record, which still stands today, broke Rocket Richard’s previous record of 8 points in a game that had stood since 1944.

Sittler talked about the goals, the support of his teammates, all very inspiring. But then he got serious and said there is a lesser-known story about that night that he wanted to share with us. To say the Boston goalie who gave up all the goals had a bad night is a bit of an understatement. Daryl said that the goalie was hearing it from the fans and his teammates and was very depressed. So depressed that he actually tried to commit suicide that night.  The goalie went down into the Toronto subway system after the game and threw himself in front of a subway train. Lucky for him, the train went through his legs.

It was at that point I wish I had yelled “GET THE PUCK OUT OF HERE”.

Coincidentally, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, last night the Boston goalie Ullmark scored on a Vancouver open net, a rare goalie goal. **

So an ancient hockey dad joke (perhaps a granddad joke it’s so old) is the name of this pilsner from Game Time. Seems like a good Hockey Night in Canada wing brew even though tonight the name of the game is lame, with just the Habs and the Senators, no beloved Leafs. So lots of pressure on this brew to make the game more exciting. Lucky for me it delivers.

Pouring an apple juice clear golden with a substantial but not over the top head. In hockey it’s important to keep your head up and this brew certainly does. An inviting bread malt aroma. First quaff is a fresh malt with a sweet lager like finish, refreshing and quite tasty. Smooth, as easy as an open net goal.  The early sweet settles into a mild crisp finish. Another great pilsner. Top shelf! It could make any game better, even an Ottawa Montreal snoozefest.

*Editor’s Comment: The Leafs were underdogs that night, Boston had a much better record going into the game. The Boston goalie was a rookie, Dave Reece, but he had been doing pretty well filling in. He may have had other things on his mind because Boston had just announced that Gerry Cheevers would be returning to Boston from the WHA, which meant Reese was probably heading back to the minors. He did go back to the minors after that game and never made it back to the NHL, retiring a year later.

**Editor’s Comment: After the goal Ullmark said "It's one of the dreams I always had that I wanted to score a goal and now I had the opportunity,"
