Turns Out It is Easy Being Green

Green Velvet

Bellwoods Brewery

7% Alcohol

Once upon a time green was the colour of envy (Invidia), one of the seven deadly sins. These days green is a virtue, saving the planet is of course a good thing for all who live in it or on it. We are in a world where the saved need savin’ too and what were once vices are now virtues.*  You may well be thinking “when will this link laden intro ever end”, but the truth is I am just getting started!

Blue Velvet. Maybe time for some relationship counselling?

When I first saw the name of this brew I didn’t think of envy or the environment, but of “Blue Velvet.” And I’m not talking about the Bobby Vinton song but of the David Lynch movie. Dennis Hopper plays the ultimate psychopath and Laura Dern cries like no other actress can. Isabella Rossellini, model turned actress, is the haunting, sultry, crazy (and twisted masochistic) lounge singer who sings her own version of the theme song.* A cult classic, the movie is not for young folks of a sensitive disposition, so any snowflakes 40 or younger may be traumatized upon viewing.

So why on earth is this citrus orange as an orange or orangier IPA named Green Velvet? According to Bellwood this brew is carbonated with reclaimed CO2. When I am at the BBQ I have a Shaq shoe size**  carbon footprint, so any chance to reduce it I jump at, especially when that chance is a beer. I am not sure if Bellwoods reclaim is going to offset the 1,118 power plants that China is cooking coal at, but every little bit helps, doesn’t it.***

The orangest of pours, a “pourange”. I may be taking a bit of literary license with that homemade portmanteau, a license that had been previously revoked, but here I am writing recklessly again. Hazy and headless, it has a super tropical citrus mix aroma, with a helpful helping of hops in hand. Citrus tropical with pineapple in the mix with slight hoppy bitters. Juicy for sure. Lots of musky juice in the net and a little itty bitty hoppy sunfish bite at the end of the line.  Nothing green about this bright orange tropical citrus juice bomb. It is super hazy juicy but manages not to go over the top.

And by drinking one you are helping to usher CO2 reclaim into the brewing industry. It turns out being green is easier than we thought.

*Editor’s Comment: The 1986 cult classic “Blue Velvet” was written and directed by David Lynch. Laura Dern is the daughter of screen icons Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. Laura Dern and Ladd just published an autobiography entitled Honey, Baby, Mine, an interesting read. Isabella Rossellini was an out of the box and genius casting decision. A model and spokesperson for Lancome, the role was controversial. Due to the movie her agents dropped her from their roster, and the nuns from the school she went to prayed for her. Rossellini also comes from filmdom royalty, daughter of Ingrid Bergman and film director Roberto Rossellini.

**Editor’s Comment: NBA Hall of Famer and Epson printer spokesperson Shaquille O’Neal wears a size 22 sneaker.

***Editor’s Comment: China has the greatest number of coal-fired power stations of any country with 1,118 in operation. India isn’t even a close second with only ¼ of the plants that China has.
