Two Loons IPA

Two Loons Brewing

Eagle hunting a loon. The loon escaped.

You know what two loons are called? A pair of loons of course. Do you know what a flock of loons are called? An asylum of loons! For real. How funny is that (redundant question).

Love the brewery name. Love the loon logo. Love their slogan “Beer’s Calling” which could mean that this beer is calling me, which wouldn’t make it unique. Or that this beer’s calling is to slake my thirst which would also not make it unique. It also could be analogous to a loon call. All very clever on their part or perhaps over thought on my part. Whatever.

The other thing I love is this beer. In honour of the occasion and to infuse a bit of culture into this website I have done me some rhymin’. It’s not exactly in the same league as the Editor’s Puppy Poop Crap Rap but it works for me.

I had one two loon and was finished too soon. You know it’s a good brew, when you wish it was two.

A bright golden pour, foreshadowing juicy, with a bright white head, foreshadowing hoppy.* Hazy crazy as a loon. Some zing in the thing! An aroma of fruit and hops ala mode. The taste is funky fruit and hops, Stoop Down #39 plus Funk #48 and Funk #49** adds up to… well adds up to a lot of funk and it’s all great.  This is one funky fruit with a smooth hops finale.  A smooth almost creamy mouthfeel with an abundance of juice and a hoppy bitter mild finish. A classic IPA, the kind of beer that gives IPAs a good name.  It’s got the fruit, it’s got the zing, with smooth and mellow in between.

Is that the lonesome call of the loon? No, that’s the refreshing call of a classic IPA.

*Editor’s Comment: The hue or head are neither causal nor correlational to juiciness or hoppiness.

**Editor’s Comment: "Stoop Down #39" is a 1974 J. Geils Band song from their "Nightmares" album. "Funk #48" is from the James Gang’s 1969 release, “Yer Album”. "Funk #49" was from the James Gang 1970 album “The James Gang Rides Again”. All three together add up to 136 degrees of funk.

Editor’s Comment: Although ducks and geese are quite ambulatory on land a loon stays in the water. Their legs are further back on their body and designed for diving, not for an on-land stroll. One of the few predator’s of a loon is a bald eagle. The picture shows a bald eagle eying a loon at spring break-up a few years ago at the reviewer’s cottage. The loon escaped.
