Lots of breweries are running restaurants that serve beer. But there are still a few chill brewers out there that are running bars that serve food, and Mascot in the entertainment district of downtown TO is doing just that.* A step or two down into a room with no view other than the brew. Sit where you want. A varied selection of interestingly named brews from which to choose. I fondly recall a Mascot lightweight , so I decided to try out the other end of the spectrum and a dark stout named Coco (by Mascot not Chanel) caught my eye and my fancy.
A great looking pour, a draft drawn by an artist. It has a delicious cocoa aroma, very inviting. This is aromatherapy for a cranky old man. A very creamy mouthfeel. Enough chocolate to make Willie Wonka stand up and take notice. Mild roast and minimal bitters. Consistent loco coco with mild stout stylings throughout A chocolate lovers stout no doubt. The head settles but the creamy body stays the course. I didn’t realize the high ABV until I Checked on the details, it comes across as smooth serve, not a boozy brewski. I didn’t take on any big swigs, I wanted to make it last. Just like their Pilly, it’s flavourful (not flavorful). The type of brew that is worth savouring (not savoring).
