What the Hell is a Pog?

POG Fresh Fruit Sour

Collective Arts Brewing

6% Alcohol

These brewers and their fancy new fangled names for their brews. What the hell is a “pog” I asked myself. My research revealed much. Apparently in gaming circles pog means “a play of the game” and in Twitch speak pog means excellent, awesome or remarkable. In the military POG is a derogatory term meaning a “person other than a grunt” and referring to non-combat personnel. The dictionary says a pog is a small collectible disc with an image on it that is used in playing games. However pog is not in the Scrabble dictionary so before you sneak it on that triple word square be prepared for a challenge. In the urban dictionary a pog is a man or woman who befriends someone for a shortterm romantic relationship and is then insulted when they are denied.  Sounds like a player to me, and not of the Scrabble variety.

Then I looked at the can again, and read Passion Fruit, Orange and Guava. POG. By just reading the can first I could have saved myself hours of useless trivia research on the WW Web.

Beer review time. If you’ve never had a sour never say never, the first thing you should know is that they don’t taste like any beer you have had before. So open your mind before you open the can. This one pours thick and juicy with extra pulp, pulp non-fiction. It has a very citrus aroma with a tartness that spells and smells grapefruit.  The taste is like an orange peach combo with a nice mouth feel and a nice tart finish. A great fresh taste, tart not too sour so I’m not at all dour. With a peppered pistachio pairing, to sneak in an arbitrary alliteration.*

A very refreshing juicer with a touch of a tart finish, this really is a hot weather treat and probably would be the cat’s pajamas** on a scorcher of a day flippin’ the bird at the BBQ.

*Editor’s Comment: Or two.

**Editor’s Comment: The cat’s pajamas is a dated term from the 1920’s that means excellent. It is a flapper term, at that time a “cat” referred not to the household pet but to a fashionable young woman of the day. The term was later taken up in jazz circles and referred to someone who exhibited style, as in a cool cat or a hepcat.

A pog in my day was a derogatory name for a woman. Like cross between a pig and a dog.

Wow, that sure is nasty. From play of the game and excellent to that one, quite the range of interpretations. We never came up with that in our research.
