When you retire you get lots of advice. Financial tips from guys trying to borrow money from you. Happiness advice from pissed-off old timers done wrong by the world. Relationship guidelines from people on their fifth spouse. Health advisories from people twice as large as they should be. No matter where the advice comes from, one thing they all agree on is “you need to have a pastime.”
Now I’m not nearly as good at taking advice as I am at giving it. “I drink beer, that’s my favorite pastime” I told them. The Doobie Brothers just shook their heads and said “What were once vices are now habits”. George Thorogood told me “You need to have bourbon and scotch with that beer.” I think Bruce Springsteen misunderstood, he told me “Ah yes, past times, those glory days”.*
Ok, so beer drinking isn’t a real hobby. But now finally I have a real pastime, that being a pint of Pastime Pilsner from Cameron’s. It’s actually a fitting celebration pint with a blue jay on the can, as the COM have just closed a big deal with the Toronto Blue Jays! That’s right, we bought 5 tickets in the 500 seating section for an upcoming game. These seats are so far in the rafters that seagulls have been known to get beak bleeds up there.
As for this brew, it pours super clear, light golden, with a wispy foam head there and gone. The aroma is mild malt with a bit of a smoky nose to it. Reminiscent of a Rauchbier, which just so happens to be one of my least favourite genres. The taste is a light smoky malt with a nice crisp pilsner finish. A touch of floral graced the palate. I’m not to fauna of flora either.** The roast morphed into a full-fledged floral flourish. A fire at the local florist. Complex for a Pilsner, and despite the competing flavours it is refreshing and tasty, but because of them not your typical Pils.
