What’s Up?

Up Beer

Gateway City Brewery

2.6% Alcohol

How low can you go is an expression often applicable to the COM AGM, but in this case it’s this beer’s ABV. The trend of 0% ABV has been quickly followed with the Micro beer trend, extra low ABVs for those who can’t handle a light beer but don’t want to be a zero. Gateway City’s Up Beer is the official beer of “Up Here”.* Seems fitting since COMDB is the official beer review website of “Up Yours”. “Up Here” is an urban (as opposed to urbane) art and music festival held each year in the near North city of Sudbury. “Up Yours” is a cranky state of mind that is held year-round by cranky old men everywhere.

Pouring an Up Beer up here on my boathouse by the fire table night light. A very light golden super clear beer. As clear as our vision of free beer, which by the way is often mentioned but seldom attained. Smells like water with a single lonely malt grain dipped in it, very mild malt aroma. A bit more malt in the taste than in the smell.  Light malt, no hops or bitters, or much alcohol for that matter, and a bit fizzy. It has a flat dry finish and no aftertaste. Not coincidentally as easy drinking as water. This wouldn’t last a chicken on the BBQ, maybe a hot dog?

Really, just how light is this beer you ask. Put it this way, this brew makes Cracked Canoe look like an imperial stout. It makes Sleemans 2.0 seem like a triple IPA. I had to put it in a heavy glass so it wouldn’t float away into the night.

Ice cold it’s very refreshing, and not surprisingly it is big swiggable. Crushable, chuggable. You could beer bong it, shotgun it, snorkel and funnel it. All at once.

I could imagine this would be a great beer after mountain biking, or jogging, or cycling or any of those other activities that I can only imagine. For me it was refreshing after climbing the steps to the top of the boathouse.

*Editor’s Comment: In it’s tenth year, Up Here is an art festival held August 15th to 18th this year. Installation artists, graffitists, and emerging musicians are on display throughout the city of Sudbury.
