For some reason the first thing that came to mind when I thought of neon was the 70’s 80’s TV show Happy Days with the title of the show lit up at the start of each episode in neon lights, that lame theme song ironically unlike any of the rock and roll that those teens would have been listening to at the time. Ron Howard was to be the star but Henry Winkler’s character Fonzie started to take center stage, causing some “teen” angst for Howard*, even though he was 20 when the show premiered. I know in our teen years a show about us would have been called Hoppy Days, which segues into this hazy IPA review.
Maybe the name neon should have been saved for a “light” beer? Just sayin’.
A nice bright OJ pour (as in the juice, not The Juice**), bright and very hazy. An OJ pour might be one to die for? By the way, Norm Macdonald, the great Canadian comedian, got fired from SNL because he continually told OJ jokes on the SNL news segment and the head of NBC at the time, Don Ohlmeyer, who was OJ’s friend, didn’t see the humour in that and took exception. Check out Norm Macdonald on youtube, he was way too funny for Don Ohlmeyer that’s for sure. Where was I, oh yea, a hoppy hazy aroma. There is mild fruit, hoppy body and a bitter finish, which I expect to fade. It is fresh and refreshing. As the bitter fades it is replaced by some finishing fizz. The finish alternates between tart, fizzy and bitter. A mild tropical fruit body. The bitter comes and goes like the name of that song, what is it called again? Or it come and goes in waves. Wait a minute, Comes and Goes in Waves, that’s the name of that song.
This review has been a bit scattered to say the least, time to pull it all together. A very hazy, tropical fruit forward IPA with a hoppy body and a finish alternating from tart to bitter and back again. Refreshing. It’s name won’t go up in lights but it can play a supporting role in my beer fridge.
