You don’t call it a grand canyon, you call it The grand canyon. You don’t call it an Eiffel Tower, it’s The Eiffel tower. And you don’t call Niagara Falls just another Falls, it’s The Falls. Where is this awkward and overbearing segue heading? Well, Niagara based Silversmith decided that you don’t call this beer a black lager, you call it The Black Lager. Perhaps the penultimate pint? Is their claim audacious or accurate, prideful and preposterous or precise, carefree or correct. They say it’s an award winner and the beer that started it all for them. Sounds like a quaffing is in the offing.
This brew pours substantial with a shade of schwarz * with a slim bubbly tan head that faded as fast as a new year’s resolution. Roasted malt and mild coffee aroma, definitely stout like. Great roasted malt, very mild coffee flavour, a stout body but with a lager mouth feel. A smooth slightly sweet finish. A very well balanced dark lager, could it be The Black Lager?
Not the first schwarzbier I have downed and it won’t be the last. This one is The one I rang in the new year with. 2023, so far so good.
Happy new year.
