The COMDB translation department were ready and willing to take on Schwarz. Halloween always seems to raise their spirits. Schwarz* bier directly translates from German to “Black Beer”. My first thought when I saw this beer was of the genius of Mel Brooks** and his character Yogurt in the movie Spaceballs saying to Lone Star “May the Schwartz be with you.”
Creemore Springs Brewery started in 1987 from the former town of Creemore, another brewery in the Collingwood area. The Translation department must be feeling their oats***, they jumped in to tell us that Creemore comes from the Irish “Croí Mór “ which means “big heart”. The brewer’s website explains the history of the company, and many times tells us that nothing has changed since their early days. I find it interesting that it doesn’t mention a rather significant part of the company history, that they were acquired in 2005 by Molsons. The purchase price was not disclosed, but industry sources said Molson paid about $25-million for the privately-held brewery. I guess being owned by a $10.6 Billon USD per year company may put into question whether you are a craft brewer or not?
Beer time. Another Creemore special edition brew, this one pours dark and substantial with a tan to white topper. A roasted malt and fresh aroma, smells great. The flavour matched the aroma, roasted malt delicious, but with a watery mouthfeel which was surprising seeing how thick it seemed to pour. I think since the aroma and flavour was approaching a porter I was expecting more substance to the pour, but it definitely has a lager mouthfeel. The full flavour combined with the lager finish leads to a refreshing combination. No hops no bitters, a smooth nice roasted malt with a clean fresh finish. True to their word, this edition is actually special.
