An IBU Alumni and Not Bitter About It

Wow, 70 IBU. My old buddy JT watches his IBUs like I watch my hockey. Me, not so much. I always thought that IBU was a midwestern university but once again I am incorrect. Apparently, it stands for International Bitterness Unit.* When it comes to International bitterness I would guess Harry and Meaghan push the dial towards the high end of the scale but it’s hard to have sympathy (no purple hearts) for self-inflicted wounds.

So how bitter can you get? Dank and dark was 65 but you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t judge a look from a lover, and you can’t judge a brew by it’s IBU. A sampling is mandatory, and it appears I am the man for the job.

Hops and juice in the air tonight, oh lord.**  A taste of some hoppy bitters with some mild juice in the background. Despite the high IBU this brew is not over the top, hold on to your hat, what just hit me, brace for impact bitter. More like a refreshing bitter. This brew is starting to come into balance. Refresh and destress (not distress), hoppy bitters still with us.  Near the bottom of the poppy’s beer tankard the mild juice stays and bitters fade a tad.

Aroma was juicy but the brew not so much, refreshing and solid hops and bitters but not overboard so no rescue required, but a bit more juice in the tank(ard) would be nice.

*Editor’s Comment: The International Bitterness (or Bittering) Unit can be applied to beer or other drinks or food but It is a standard measurement when it comes to craft beers with many of them now displaying it on the can. It is a measure of the main chemical compounds in a beer that make it taste bitter. Although it usually correlates well with the bitter taste of your beer it does not always because other elements of the brew may overshadow the bitterness. Beer bitterness IBU can range from 5 to 120 although most brews will be between 15 to 80.

**Editor’s Comment: According to the 2009 movie “The Hangover”, the 1981 Phil Collins song “In the Air Tonight” is one of Mike Tyson’s favourite tunes, oh lord.

Final Rating: IBU Too at 14 out of 20
