Bad Köstritzer

Köstritzer Edel Pils

Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei

4.8% Alcohol

The Köstritzer brewery is named after the town of Bad Köstritzer in central Germany and is famous for their schwarzbier which they have been brewing since 1543. They even call their brewery a Schwarzbier brewery. So how will they do with a pale pilsner? A quaffing is in the offing.

The COMDB translation department told us it wasn’t October yet so they were hesitant to jump into their lederhosen for a German translation. Upon consulting their collective agreement it was clear that German translations were available year round. So they got to work and came up with  Edel Pils = Noble Beer. As an added bonus they told us Edelwiess mean noble white. Good to know. And Edelmann means noble man. I had to leave to write this review, they could still be translating for all I know.

This chilled pils filled my chilled pils glass quite nicely. Pale golden with a trim weiss head. The oh so familiar bread malt aroma, like the bakery at the Ports. Taste is mild malt body with a grainy chalky finish, not the Lenny Kravitz smooth finish I was hoping for. Hoping that the lasting impression will be better than the first impression. Perhaps the best is yet to come?

By the way, there were brief snippets of a hockey game on the tube last night in between online betting advertisements. The game was choppier than a lumberjack convention, which seemed coincidental with this choppy pils.

A nice refreshing body but no Disney ending here, it seems like the finish wants to be crisp but it just comes up harsh. Too bad. It had prime Pilsner potential but a blow out on the backend. Grainy chalkboard chalky astringent finish and aftertaste.

The good news is 500ml, the bad news I wish it was a 333ml stubby.  The frustrating finish fades a bit but peskily perseveres and ultimately prevails.

I think they should have named this brew after the town it hails from, Bad Köstritzer. Too bad.
