Gaslighting a Third Period Fire

Gaslight Helles

Muddy York Brewing Co.

5.4% Alcohol

How about those Leafs. Game 4 was déjà vu all over again. Third period, down but not out, broke but not broken, with the fat lady in the stands doing her “do re mi” warm ups. Things certainly looked dire. But just like old Bob Dylan used to say, when you ain’t got nothing you’ve got nothing to lose.* So what do they do? Tie it up like a rodeo star and go top shelf red light in OT to go home with the series lead. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I was going from dismay and consternation to hooray and jubilation, while quaffing a beer of course. A Muddy York Gaslight Helles to be precise.

Helles designates a traditional German pale lager produced from Munich and surrounding regions and we have sampled a few in our day. Been to Helles and back one might say.

Boyer gaslighting Bergman. Where is Bogie when you need him?

To gaslight someone is when you mess with their head to try to make them think they are crazy. I wonder if it would be easier or harder to gaslight someone who actually is crazy. Then I thought why would you even do that to start with? Maybe make them crazier? To see if you could do it? Why would you drive someone crazy, and not in a good way? A motive? In the movie** it was all about the Benjamins. Aha, money, the root of all evil according to Pink Floyd. *** This whole line of illogic is driving me …….. to drink, not a long drive I might add (before the Editor does).

A bright golden somewhat hazy memory of a pour, with a bright white unclear cloudy head. A pour man’s pour. A back-to-basics mild malt aroma. An old school light, no gas now or after, malt taste with a touch of tang where the sweet used to be. A mild lager sour? Sounds crazy, but no. not that tangy. The tang wavered and went out as quickly as it came in. It settled into a traditional lager body but with a bit of a crisp pilsner rather than sweet lager finish. Good basic down to earth lager. Helles on earth.

Am I crazy about this brew? I wouldn’t say that but it did hit the spot during a Leaf’s playoff come from behind OT victory, so it has that going for it.

*Editor’s Comment: From the 1965 song by Bob Dylan “Like a Rolling Stone”.

**Editor’s Comment: In the 1944 movie “Gaslight”, Charles Boyer marries Ingrid Bergman after a two week whirlwind romance and proceeds to make her believe she is crazy. For her inheritance money of course. Bergman won the best actress Oscar for her role. The term ‘gaslighting” seems to have derived from the original 1938 play “Gas Light”, where one of the plot devices was the gas lighting in the house wavers whenever the wife is alone in the house, one more trick by the husband to make her question her own sanity.

***Editor’s Comment: Although Pink Floyd do use that line in their song “Money” from their 1973 “Dark Side of the Moon” album, the saying did show up many years earlier in the Bible. “Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all of evil.”
