Over dinner at the COMDB AGM and I thought I would get a review in. Who says multi-tasking isn’t productive?* I was intrigued by Sawdust City’s new beer San Diego Dreamin’. Although it appears to be an obvious reference, or play on, the song title “California Dreamin’”, ** Sawdust tells us it actually pays tribute to a meeting in San Diego many years ago of the future collaborators of this light dark. That’s right, I said it, a light dark. Or a dark light if you are in a pedantic panic over it. I would be happy to agree with you, but then we would both be wrong. Where was I? Multitasking? No, I dealt with that already.
It pours as dark as Darth, but no relation to Luke.*** The head must have been in the 1.5% of ABV that they removed from this brew. I was wondering if the California reference might have been foreshadowing a Cali Common, but no. This is a schwarz dark lager wannabe, the classic aroma of a schwarz with full roasted malts and no hops. A first swig of full dark roasted malt flavour with a very light almost fizzy mouthfeel and a crispy light finish. An interesting and different taste. As I continued my quaff I couldn’t help but think that this would have been a better full ABV dark lager as opposed to a light, “sessionable” one. The taste went from unique to a bit wanting, as in I was wanting something more. Ok I guess, but I felt the schwarz was not strong in this one.
A light dark, or a dark light. No matter how you say it, I think it’s an idea whose time has not yet come.
