Editor: Once again RA is on the case, this time a Grand River* brew. The brewery was founded in 2007 and originally located in Cambridge Ontario, on the banks of the Grand River. It was purchased by Magnotta Wines in 2018. In 2020 Magnotta closed the Cambridge brewing facility and now brews the various GR brands from their Vaughn location.

Bubbly beyond belief. A light malt taste, it was good. This is what a beer should taste like. Over the top at times I profess, but I enjoyed it. It’s only after burping* that I pick up the floral, fruity and citrus American hops.

I think Grand River is home to Thomas Crapper, the inventor of the first flush toilet in Canada.**

**Editor’s Comment: American Standard and Cambridge are brands of bathroom fixtures that were manufactured in the area. However, Thomas Crapper (1836 to1910) was not Canadian but British and lived nowhere near Grand River, Ontario. His sanitary engineering shops were setup in London England near the Thames. The urban myth that Crapper invented the toilet is a common misconception largely perpetuated by a 1969 fictional biography of Crapper by satirist Wallace Reyburn. The origins of flush toilet date back to the late 1500’s. The first patent for what we would recognize as a flush toilet was granted to Alexander Cummings in 1775. Crapper did make numerous improvements to the toilet and was granted three patents for those innovations. The slang word “crap” is sometimes thought to be derived from the name Crapper however that’s not the case. The use of the word for garbage or waste predates Crapper and is thought to be from the medieval Latin “crappa”.
