We haven’t visited Ace Hill* in a while but I recall their pilsner knocked it out of the park. A Vienna Lager is about as close as you can get to Amber without incurring an harassment charge,** and those of you who know me, know I love me an amber. So I had high hopes that this brew would be top shelf, which coincidentally is where I found it in my beer fridge.
We have sampled a few Vienna’s with good results in the past. Manitoulin’s was a Twin Bluffs on tap, Fenelon’s Vienna version was OK. Red Pole’s too sweet missed the mark, but New Ontario’s squeeze box playing bear Hopfen Muncher kept Oktoberfest going with an excellent VL.
This Ace in the hole poured a lighter shade of amber, a golden age Vienna. A bit hazy, with a slim white head. Malty malt aroma, and so fresh it deserves a slap from Amber.** The taste a malt bread caramel sweet, not an amber but not far off, with a very slight crisp finish. A slick mouthfeel, smooth and easy going down. A light watery body as opposed to full and heavy lends itself to the easy drinking. A good lighter Vienna.
