Good Night Vienna

Good night for a Vienna.

A night out on the town with my much better half and a shout out to Richard and Sarah who joined us from across the pond. They are braving snow, ice and freezing temperatures to enjoy all the great white North has to offer this time of year, that being snow, ice and freezing temperatures. It was great to get together again. The night started out as a bit of a one ring circus as the missus misplaced her engagement ring and a frantic search ensued. Luckily (for my bank account) we found it the next morning. Eventually the night went to the dogs so to speak, that being the family pets, with pooch pics seeming to dominate some of the smart phones at the table.

It wasn’t the last train to Clarksville*, but we did meet at The Station. That being the restaurant, not the train or police one, in case you were wondering. Our helpful and knowledgeable server was quite perceptive and asked me if I was interested in a beverage. I told her I was indeed, perhaps something on tap that I hadn’t tried before. My request was not at all helpful but it didn’t phase her a bit. It turns out they have a great selection of brews and Manitoulin’s Vienna Lager caught my eye and imagination.

There was no philosophical discussion about half full or half empty when it came to this Vienna. Trim to the rim, this was a full pint and more, no room left for any head. And the choice seemed to be clear, as in see through. A full and fulsome golden approaching amber pour. Mild malt aroma, which lead to a malt forward taste. A watery lager mouthfeel, smooth, with no hops or bitters on the finish. It is near to an amber in full flavour but not quite.  A tasty full flavoured lager, easy drinking with a smooth finish. Very nice. A night out with good company, good food, and good beer.  Good night Vienna.

*Editor’s Comment: The phrase "Goodnight Vienna" is British slang that means events have reached a state of completion; nothing more can be done. It also happens to be the name of Ringo Starr’s 4th solo album which was released in 1974, as well as a 1932 movie musical of the same name.

**Editor’s Comment: “Last Train to Clarksville” is a 1966 number 1 hit for the Monkees written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. “Take the last train to Clarksville, and I'll meet you at the station…”
