Four Cranky Quaffers Congregate at the Curious Club

Pancake Bay Sweet Brunch Stout

Something in the Water Brewing Co.

5.3% Alcohol

Me: I’m now an official member of the Curious Club.

Department of Morality: Sounds like a kinky strip joint. Were you out with Farmer Steve again?

Me: Well yes, and JT and RA too, but we were at a brewery called Something in the Water.

Department of Morality: I’m sure there was something in the water. How did they come up with the name “Curious”.

Me: I’m not sure but I’m dying to find out.

The Cranky Old Men converged on the Curious Club, that being the Something in the Water K-Town taps. The super helpful staff had us covered from A to Z, from Alexandra to Zayden to be precise. Some waiters think IPAs and ABVs and IBUs are TMI. But Zayden dazzled us with the facts and the back stories on each and every beer that SITW was serving with a passionate discourse. By the time he was done we were all thirstier than a drought-stricken Heifer at a salt lick.

A Fancy Flight for Sure

Despite being warned that RA was a flight risk, SITW took their chances and lined us up with a double flight of 8 very different samplers to ensure we were drinking curiously. A flight of fancy, as in fancy pants beers. More curiouser and curiouser than an Alice in Wonderland growth spurt,* there were Purple Lagers, Peanut Butter and Jam Sours, and six other curious crafts. We sampled them all and then ordered our chaser of choice.

My curious club initiation was a Pancake Bay Sweet Brunch Stout.** A pint of high pedigree, an award winner at the World Beer Awards no less. A shiny dark pour with a tan topper, looking good with Alexx and Zayden standing behind their pour, literally. An aroma of roasted malt and coffee stout with a sweet surprise, is that maple syrup? Pancake, brunch, sweet, maple syrup, it’s all coming together for me now.

Five kinds of malts to go with the oats, coffee, milk sugar and then just like my Eggos in the morning, top it off with maple syrup. The mouthfeel is lighter than I expected, watery and easy drinking. The roasted malt is full flavoured with oat milk sweet and espresso bitters and a coffee aftertaste. Sweet but not cloyingly so, just right sweet. The maple syrup that I thought I caught in the aroma was not as evident in the quaff. The coffee carries into the aftertaste and accentuates the full flavour of this complex sweet stout.

A classic coffee stout with something in the water. Enjoyable with a light feel yet full flavoured and mid-range ABV. Just curious enough I would say.

*Editor’s Comment: From “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” Chapter II when she grew into a giant Alice. “Curiouser and curiouser!' cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English).”

**Editor’s Comment: Pancake Bay Provincial Park is a 3 km stretch of sand on the East shore of Lake Superior at Batchewana Bay. The park is located North of Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, along the historic trading route of the Voyageurs.
