Vimy Stout

Vimy Brewing Co.

4.5% Alcohol

Vimy Brewing is dedicated to brewing “true Canadian beer that celebrates everything great about Canada”. I’ll drink to that! * The brewery is named after the World War 1 battle site of Vimy Ridge where Canadian forces achieved a decisive victory, but at a high cost. ** Unfortunately, the war to end all wars didn’t.

We made a virtual visit to Vimy Hill 145 last Remembrance Day. Time for another toast to those who gave the most.

A black cat pour, no nitro evolution or even head on this one. A strong roast malt nose, a stout, no doubt about it. First quaff is a strong roast malt going into mild cocoa with an aggressive espresso bitters finish. Not really balanced, and not smooth, but certainly tasty. The espresso backend is a touch harsh, which makes for a strong finish.

A good solid standup stout, no doubt.

*Editor’s Comment: It doesn’t take a lot. I think you once drank to your shoe being untied.

**Editor’s Comment: As part of a major Allied offensive in the spring of 1917, 15,000 to 20,000 Canadian soldiers formed the four divisions of the Canadian Corps that attacked the German stronghold of Vimy Ridge between April 9th to April 17th 1917. Approximately 3,598 Canadians died at the Battle of Vimy Ridge, with around 7,000 wounded. The battle was a significant military victory * for Canada and the Allied forces but came at a high cost.
