Brock University, Brockville, Brock Street which and some say is the most refreshing street in Canada. * And now Sir Isaac’s Pale Ale. The Decew brew crew encourage us to “taste Niagara’s history” with this ale named after Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, the one-time Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. History in school was a challenge for me. I never got past perfect in grammar class either. Although I have a great memory it is very short and did not extend past or even to the time between reading the text and writing the test. But as far as history class goes, or any class for that matter, that’s all in the past now.
But what is in the present is this Decew Falls golden semi-clear beer with a light bright white head. It has a fresh mild fruit aroma. First taste yields a tropical fruit somewhat sweet body straight to malt and then bitters to acerbic crisp finish and aftertaste. An interesting sequence that works because it’s so well balanced. It’s not a smooth finish but it is a refreshing one. Usually, I wouldn’t appreciate these acerbic bitters but they are mild, and this fruit to bitters to acerbic aftertaste works well with this one. Bold, decisive and a winner, speaking in generalities.
Although it does seem ironic that the war of 1812 General who many credit with keeping the Americans out of Canada has his name on an American Pale Ale. I’ll leave the exercises in irony to Alanis, I’m only here for the beer. **
