Palm City

Dominion City Brewing Co.

5% Alcohol

I checked out the beer fridge and this bright pink can of Palm City looked handy. Sorry, sometimes I just can’t resist. * When I saw this beer name my first thought went to the Palm Islands in Dubai. What do you do when all the waterfront property is already bought? Build more waterfront of course. I visited them while in Dubai many years ago when they were in their final stages of construction. ** Impressive to say the least. Perhaps their property values have dropped a bit recently, having bad neighbours can do that. ***

But it turns out this beer was not named after a man made middle east island, but a much more congenial craft collaboration. Lost Palms Brewing, just around the bend from Ottawa, in Miami, Australia, is in cahoots with Dominion City on this pink and pretty itty bitty brewski. Lost PALMS, Dominion CITY, Palm City, ever so clever.

The can may be pink (a nod to the pink environs of Lost Palms) but the contents are clear and golden, doing a pretty good pilsner impersonation. Extra Pale Ales opt for less malt and more hops than their less pale Pale Ale cousins. This one comes up with fruit and hops on the nose, with some grapefruit bitters in waiting. First taste is immediately tropical juicy, going to hops then bitters and then a very crisp dry finish and aftertaste. Much like a west coast pils but hoppier. Very juicy a little hoppy, the bitters fading a bit and the dry finish has been liquidated. Tropical juice gets a bit sweet, the hops come and go.

An extra enjoyable pale ale, no matter what city or country you drink it in.

*Editor’s Comment: We wish you could.

**Editor’s Comment: The Palm Jumeriah has become the home to a number of notable fugitives over the years. Zlochevskiy (Ukranian, embezzlement), Johannes Leijdekkers (Dutch, narcotics trafficking), Danilo Vunjao Santana Gouveia (Brazilian, money laundering through a bitcoin pyramid scheme), Obaid Khanani (Indian, drug trafficking), Samuele Landi (Italian, fugitive of Italy), Rasul Danialzadeh (Iranian, bribery) are just a few of the notable villa owners on the island. Other less indictable residents on the Palms include Christian Ronaldo and David and Victoria Beckham.

***Editor’s Comment: Dubai is only about 200 kms from the Strait of Hormuz where the US/Israel/Iranian war is currently focused. Most recently the Fairmont Hotel on the Palm Jumeriah island was hit by an Iranian missile in response to US /Israeli strikes on Iran.
