No Coast IPA

Great Lakes Brewery

7% Alcohol

I’ve been from coast to coast to coast in this great country called Canada.  When it comes to the US of A I’ve been to the Pacific, the Atlantic and what they used to call the Gulf of Mexico too.  I’ve dipped a toe in the Mediterranean, Indian, and Red Seas, and countless lakes and rivers.  When it comes to a host with no coast I’ve been from A to Z. Austria to Zimbabwe, as well as Ethiopia, Switzerland, Vatican City and Zambia to name a few landlocked lands.* So coast or no coast, I’m good to go.

But I find it interesting, counterintuitive, perhaps even ironic, that Great LAKES Brewery is brewing up a No Coaster, them being on a lake with 1,146 kilometers of coast line. However, for us seasoned IPA drinkers, old salts so to speak, the message is clear. This isn’t a West Coast or East Coast IPA. GLB tells us this beer is a “rebel without a coast”. ** Time to see if we toast or roast No Coast.

A dark Gold Coast pour, with a bright white beginner’s surf. It has a candy sweet tropical juicy nose with some hops in the background. First taste is mild tropical juice with busy fizz, then malt to mild bitters, all safe and sound. No rebel yell from past Idols, this one is coastal not postal. The balanced juice malt bitter combo is nicely done. Like most of us, everything gets a little tamer over time, but this one maintains the balance some of us lose with age.  Coast or no coast, cause or no cause, this brew gets a toast not a roast.

*Editor’s Comment: There are 44 countries that are landlocked, having no access to an ocean.

**Editor’s Comment: The 1955 movie “Rebel Without a Cause” was a breakthrough role for James Dean, Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood and somewhat prophetic of Dean’s early demise at the age of 24. The movie itself was released a month after Dean’s death. The origins of the movie title can be traced back to the 1944 psychological study by Dr. Robert Lidner, titled “Rebel Without a Cause: The Hypnoanalysis of a Criminal Psychopath.” Even though it was science based, Warner Brothers recognized the potential dramatic elements within the study and bought the movie rights to the book in 1946.
