Ol’ Lynne Anderson never promised me a rose garden, and that’s OK by me. * When it comes to my beer I’ve never been fond of a floral flourish myself. But I suspect Willibald is being more philosophical than literal naming their pale ale Roses Among Thorns. ** I think they’re they telling us that if you can put up with all the pricks in life you might just find a girl named Rose who by any other name would be as sweet. ***
Regardless of any Freudian analysis of my interpretations of the meaning in the name, I’m much more interested in what’s in the can. Time to pop the top on this beer garden.
A not at all pale, but a muted golden grapefruit orange hazy pour with a trace of lace headline. A juicy aroma, it smells like it looks, a citrus tropical juicer. Sure enough, it is citrus juicy with a bit of a fizz, no bitters yet. As progress is made the juice stays the course with the addition of a mild flat dry finish, a nice sequence and combination. Definitely a big swigger, it’s as easy as Lionel Richie on a Sunday morning. **** I had to take another big swig just to be sure. After a few big swigs I found the bottom of my glass coming into view far sooner than I expected.
Juicy, easy drinking and very tasty. This one is all roses, no thorns.
*Editor’s Comment: “Rose Garden” is a 1967 hit song written by Joe South and most famously recorded by Lynn Anderson. “I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden, Along with the sunshine, there’s gotta be a little rain sometimes.”
**Editor’s Comment: Roses Among Thorns is the title of a book that compiles life advice from the letters of St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), the patron saint of writers.
***Editor’s Comment: Shakespeare is most likely spinning in his Stratford-upon-Avon grave at this very moment. Seldom has he been as misquoted as by this Reviewer.
****Editor’s Comment: The 1977 hit song “Easy” written by Lionel Richie and performed by The Commodores, still gets considerable air play today. Although the music is mellow and some would say romantic, the lyrics are anything but. The singer is telling his girlfriend he’s breaking up with her, and not only that but he’s laidback and easy like a Sunday morning about ending the relationship.
