For some reason beyond reason I thought that this Beyond the Pale ale, Pink Fuzz, sounded like a good fit for a Mother’s Day beer sampling. And even though the old man used to say “Mother’s day is every day but Father’s Day is only once a year”, it’s not every day that you hear the phrase “Mother’s Day beer sampling”. That being said, twice now actually, our pedantic pain in the posterior Editor seems to think that choosing a beer named Pink Fuzz for Mother’s Day is a sexist choice. His concern seems somewhat surprising to me seeing as our website name, Cranky Old Men Drinking Beer, is just oozing with diversity (and sarcasm). *
Regardless of this website’s name, our MD selection, or any other misguided but unintentional transgressions, this is a wheat brew after all. Not our favourite genre by any means, although there have been some super suds Wheaties grace past pages. Will Pink Fuzz be a cotton candy sweet wheat treat or what you find in the lint collector of the dryer? Time for pour and score.
Golden slightly hazy, marginally fizzy and sporting a bubbly bright white foam topper, it’s a sharp looking pour and not really pink at all. A malty wheat nose, no sign of some of the usual suspects we get with a wheater. The first taste is a wheat malt grapefruit combo, all there but none over the top and all nicely balanced. I was happy to detect no banana or floral, just the citrus grapefruit juice and slight bitters. It’s not too often (maybe once in a Blue Moon) when I’m tempted to big swig a wheat beer, but this one passed the big swig test quite nicely.
The grapefruit and mild finish remind me of a mild pale or a session IPA, quite drinkable, and quite enjoyable.
