Canada Day Eh and One More Amazing Roadside Attraction

The Day We Hit The Coast

Sawdust City and 5E Baron

Dorothy said it best, there’s no place like home. After a mini armchair Eurotour I’m back just in time to celebrate our great country. Happy Canada Day Eh!

You just have to pull over for these.

I’ve done Canada from coast to coast to coast and many pints in between. Canada is big and one way we show it is with some substantial, as in biggest in the world, roadside attractions. There’s the Shediac lobster, claws and tail please. Or for a change you could visit the biggest coin, the Big Nickel of Sudbury. You wouldn’t want to run afoul of that cranky old goose about to take flight in Wawa. Even a real T-Rex would tremble at the sight of the biggest dinosaur, an extra-large T-Rex in Alberta’s Drumheller. And that would be a major for slashing if you got one across the shins from the world’s biggest hockey stick out on Vancouver Island. * But I think our greatest tourist attraction of all is Canada’s big heart.

How’s that for a sappy segue. But there’s no time for tears in our beers, we need to get down to some beer quaffin’ business with our Canada Day special. And special it is, a collab between Ontario’s own Sawdust City teaming up with the Quebecois microbrasserie 5E Baron.

A golden clear pour with a foam froth too dense to blow off. A slick juicy aroma, stone fruit tropical and not at all hoppy on the nose. First swig is a very tasty stone juicy body with a flat middlin’ bitter finish, with a juice bitters combo aftertaste. The 60 IBU is in play. This one is focused on thirst quenching and doing a bang up job of it at it. The juice and bitters are doing a two fat kids on the seesaw balancing act, both as big as any roadside attraction, this coastal has gone postal. As it warms the bitters steal the show and Betty Botter couldn’t have done it better.*

This isn’t your average West Coaster but then again, I never expect anything average from the SC crew.  Enjoyed the balance, loved the transition. This brew kept me on my toes from the juicy start to the bitter end, and savouring every swig. The Day We Hit The Coast is another bigger than life roadside attraction.

*Editor’s Comment: The world's largest hockey stick is located in the town of Duncan on Vancouver Island. The 205-foot long, 61,000 pound hockey stick, crafted from Douglas fir for Expo 86, holds the 2008 Guinness World Record for the largest in the world. However the stick is aging and has been deemed a public safety concern so there are plans to remove it. The world’s largest totem pole is located on the island in Victoria, which is the provincial capital of British Columbia.

**Editor’s Comment: “Betty Botter bought some butter, but she said the butter’s bitter. If I put it in my batter, it will make the batter bitter. But a bit of better butter will make the batter better. So she bought a bit of better butter and put it in her batter but it made her batter worse.”
