16 Tons of Number 9 Coal

Black Coal Stout

Railway City Brewery

6% Alcohol

Tennessee Ernie Ford told us that he loaded 16 tons* of number nine coal and the straw boss said, “Well, a-bless my soul”. Tonight I am loading up 16 oz of Black Coal, and I’m another day older and deeper in debt.

This stout pours black on black, coal black, black hole black. Dark dark dark. Thin brown head which quickly vanished into the primordial ooze** that is this brew. A strong aroma to go with a brew strong enough to haul 16 tons.  First swig rendered a strong full flavour with a strong finish. Not as full a mouthfeel as some stouts, it certainly doesn’t compare to a creamy Irish stout in this department.  A bit of fizz and harshness in the back end, not a smooth finish which detracts a bit from the full flavoured body. Is my mind playing tricks on me or is that a charcoal finish? Maybe it is the toasted coffee beans.

That harsh bit of an aftertaste unfortunately persevered through this  whole  full flavoured strong tasting stout.

*Editor’s Comment: “16 Tons” was a song written about coal miners in Kentucky in 1946 by Merle Travis, who also performed it. Elvis (that's Presley not Costello) sang it in his early 50’s concerts. Tennessee Ernie Ford had a number one hit with it in 1955.

**Editor's Comment: Tar sands perhaps?
