We’ve sampled a few Nordic Pales before. Some with Scandnavian hops, others with Scanavian yeasts, but what the hell are Scandinaviam botanicals? And why does spell check not correct me when I spell Scandavian wrong every time? Beau’s gives us an answer to the first question with a botanical briefing on their NPA, which has an infusion of dried heather, bog myrtle, rose hips and yarrow. Sounds less than appetizing to me. Which leads us to another question. Why? Beau’s tells us they were inspired by Scandinavian brewing tradition. Again I would ask why, but the answer that comes to mind is a quote from old Alfie Tennyson , “ours is not the reason why, ours is but to pour and try.” *
Regardless of what botanical bouquet of swamp grass and water weeds has been jammed into this brew, I’ve got to admit, that’s one Beau’s beauty pour. Centerfold material for Pourboy. ** Hazy orange bright white head. Sure looks like a hazy IPA. A snoot full of fruitful, sure smells like a juicy IPA. And the taste, well its fruit forward for sure, with some spice bitters and a very crisp dry finish. That mild spice bitter (instead of grapefruit) leaves an aftertaste that is endearing, interesting and a tad irksome all at the same time. The aftertaste does encourage you to take another drink, not that a great deal of effort in the encouragement department was required. It is tasty and refreshing, that’s for sure. An IPA body with a herbal finish makes for a complex pale, not what I expected and not for everyone, but I enjoyed it.
