This beer has been in my fridge about twice as long as most beers last in there. I can’t say that the pink can with watermelon seeds sprinkled on it is a particularly attractive look for a beer. But this is Mill St. Brewery who has been in this business for a long time, so I figured I’d try it out. It pours nicely with a good head, a decent golden colour and a nice aroma. So it looks the part of a good beer … but sadly isn’t. Perhaps it’s the combination of wheat beer with the watermelon, some kind of odd citrus overtone that leaves your mouth super dry. But most likely it’s just the watermelon. There must be a reason you can’t find watermelon juice in the grocery store. It doesn’t taste good and it brings down anything you pair it with – in this case beer.
It seems like it might make for a refreshing summer drink
watermelon = summer
beer = goodness
…what could go wrong? Turns out the taste can go wrong. Lesson learned.
Perhaps there is a market for this beer with folks who don’t actually like beer – but if you are a beer fan, you need to look elsewhere for thirst quenching this summer.
