The Grand Hotel somewhere in time.
Holy mackinaw, a porter from Founders in Grand Rapids, Michigan! Speaking of Mackinac, Michigan, Grand and porters, I remember the porter at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan somewhere in time told me that Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour made a movie there, but I can’t recall the name of the film. *
Michigan has border towns with Canada at a number of places, Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario and Michigan), Windsor and Detroit, Sarnia and Port Huron. Ontario and Michigan also share a few lakes, and great lakes they are.**
I’ve made many trips to the Upper Peninsula, from the Sault to Marquette then West to White Pine. Great scenery, great people, a world of their own almost. They know what winter looks like, that’s for sure. Founders is a little down from the UP, as in South in Grand Rapids. Can’t say as I’ve ever been to Grand Rapids, but seeing it’s known as “America’s Best Beer City” *** it should be on my keg list. That being my list of places to drink beer before I kick the keg.
I do enjoy a good porter, but do you know what I really Like? That’s right, a great porter. Maybe this one is grand.
A classic black pour into this stein of mine. A bit of a tan topper. A great, dare I say grand, aroma of a roasted malt cocoa combo. The taste is lots of flavour and lots of cocoa, very tasty. A clean smooth finish, no real bite or bitters which lends to its smoothness. It has a slight bitter aftertaste which just adds to the porter experience. There might be some coffee in there but the cocoa is the main attraction and the source of the sweet.
Some espresso shows up part way through which helps to accentuate the coca and roast. All well balanced. No shortage of flavour here. This one is so tasty that you may be tempted to take big swigs but don’t do it, it may result in a flavour OD!
A porter lover’s porter. A great porter, or grand, as the case may be.
