Brewed in the historic hamlet of Kingston, home of institutions of education and incarceration. Sir John A drank there, and drank, and drank some more. The father of confederation was a regular at the Royal Tavern* in Kingston so we are told.
So what is a Mexican beer? Mexican Lager can mean a lot of things but often describes a pale lager with flaked maize**.
What is Kingston doing brewing a Mexican beer? I guess if London, Montreal and Edmonton can brew Corona than why not have Kingston brew a Cerveza? But with so many high profile Mexican lagers to choose from, why chose a Riverhead? A North of the US border brewed South of the US border brew. Perhaps this could reignite NAFTA*** talks?
When I read on the can that it included hints of lime I got concerned. I haven’t seen too many brewers do well with lime in their brews. On the can it says it is “easily enjoyed during or after hard working days.” After work sounds good but I am not sure you should pack a few of these in your lunch box at the construction site.
So what is the verdict? Well it is an OK beer. I drank it during the Cowboys and the Buccaneers game (Dallas was robbed by old man Brady and his Tampa Bay retirees) but I think I should have been drinking it on a deck or dock in the hot sun to get the best quaff experience. That being said they did a good job with the lime, just a touch, not too much. Easy drinking lager, light, touch of lime, a traditional Mexican lager. More of a hot sunny day brew, not surprising for a Mexican Lager.
